Located on the eastern
portion of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, the Riviera Maya is a tourist
district stretching from Playa del Carmen to Tulum. Paralleling Highway
307 and the Caribbean Sea, the corridor is famous for its large scale
all-inclusive resorts.
Because of the barely offshore Belize
Barrier Reef, popular tourist activities include snorkeling and scuba
diving. Swimming in a cenote (water-filled limestone sinkhole)
is possible in numerous locations.
Archeology is also a big tourist draw.
The Instituto Nacional de Archeological operates Tulum, a Mayan
ruin built on the coast. |
